Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disorder of the Central Nervous System (CNS) white matter i.e., it occurs within the spinal cord and optic nerves and interferes with the transmission along neurones so the nature of the defect can vary enormously between individuals.
After diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis the course of the disease can vary enormously in different individuals. Medical treatment of the disease depends on the nature of the symptoms experienced. Most people will have medical drug treatment either to reduce an inflammatory episode or to attempt to slow and modify the disease progression.
Inflammation caused by Multiple Sclerosis can occur anywhere in the CNS and this can result in extremely diverse symptoms. This means that the management of MS is extremely challenging and must involve collaboration of professionals across both social and healthcare services. Specialist neuro-physiotherapy has been recognised to play a pivotal role in improving the quality of life for people affected by MS.
Neurological physiotherapy focuses on an holistic assessment of the individuals needs. Identification of key problems can lead to specialist "hands on" treatment but also referral on to other professional services e.g. orthotics.
The therapy based on the Bobath concept involves a detailed assessment of posture balance and movement. This is used as a foundation to explore each individuals potential to change and improve their movement skills. Treatment can include muscle activation/strengthening/retraining; balance work; cardiovascular work; improvement of respiratory function; sensory work; mobility; postural support; advice; education and general support with quality of life issues. Although Multiple Sclerosis is often considered as a progressive condition in our experience almost all patients can still benefit and make positive changes as a result of therapy input.
As part of offering a seamless integrated service of care, Manchester Neurotherapy Centre staff members participate in and support the Multiple Sclerosis special interest group in Greater Manchester which was set up in 2005. This group exists to improve MS services throughout Greater Manchester through the sharing of the best practice, dissemination of current knowledge and evidence base through networking amongst professionals working with people affected by MS.
