Neurological Teaching CentreYesim (Acquired Brain Injury)
I am a 28 year old and work in the IT sector. In March 2006 I suffered an acute cerebellar stroke, which necessitated life saving decompression surgery because of hydrocephalus and the resulting pressure on my brain stem. After my surgery I had almost 2 months of impaired consciousness and was left with paralysis down my left side affecting my sight, speech, left arm and left leg. I was completely immobile requiring assistance in everything I did, from moving around in bed to eating my meals and personal care. I wasn't even able to sit in a chair for more than a few minutes before feeling extremely uncomfortable.
The prospect of having a long term stay in a generic rehabilitation centre was daunting and the conflicting advice being given to us led to my husband contacting several well known private clinics where we could be confident that recovery, where possible, would be the focus.
After the very first telephone conversation, Lynne, who asked a million questions about me, my background and my illness was able to capture my husband's confidence due to her thoroughness and knowledge. The initial assessment seemed so complete that we felt better informed than we had been for some while.
I initially started having sessions at home with Linzi twice a week. Linzi's approach was realistic, optimistic and objective orientated and from the very first session I started achieving goals. This changed my entire outlook and I very quickly gained enough confidence and made enough progress so that I could start visiting the centre rather than Linzi coming to our home.
At the time of writing it is now September and I am walking, driving, shopping - in fact I can do anything I want - and have spent the end of a beautiful summer working in my garden every day. I have reduced my sessions to once a week and I am now driving the 60 mile round trip on my own! I will begin a therapeutic return to work at the end of September and I'm about to return my wheelchair to the NHS as I can't remember the last time I used it!
The team have decades of experience and were able to offer advice on many aspects of my care. It was clear that the NHS Neuro Consultants, Physiotherapists and our GP held the centre in the highest regard and recognised that both Lynne and Linzi work at the very forefront of their field.
My husband and I have no doubt that I am receiving the best possible therapy available anywhere in Europe and are certain that Lynne, Linzi and the team facilitated the fastest possible recovery.
