Robert (Incomplete Spinal Injury)

In February 2002 I broke my neck in a car accident. I was told the break was incomplete. However at the time I had no movement below my break and in the spinal rehab ward the treatment was based on the break being complete.

I spent six months in hospital and progressed well. However I suffered greatly from spasms and ended up on a lot of medication including sleeping pills. This medication was affecting my ability to concentrate and my short-term memory.

I was recommended Manchester Neurotherapy Centre by a friend who had been a physiotherapist at Stoke Mandeville. My aim was to try and improve my posture so as to reduce the spasms and the need for medication.

On my first appointment in February 2004 Lynne and Linzi confirmed that my spinal injury was incomplete and that I had more potential than I was aware of.

Fifteen months later I now take no medication. This has given me back my concentration and I no longer have a short term memory problem. This is enabling me to recommence work on a part time basis. My spasms whilst still there are much more under my control. I have also regained some use of my stomach muscles. This has considerably improved my lung strength helping me with speaking and coping with colds. It has also made me much more functional. I can pick things off the floor, put a log on the fire, put food into the Aga, and play cricket with my children. I have also regained a lot of sensation.

Going forward I am trying the Biodex Unweighing Walking System. Whilst it is early days and my expectations remain realistic any further improvement whilst not anticipated is eagerly accepted. Watch this space.

When I do reach a Plateau I will continue to use Manchester Neurotherapy Centre for maintenance physiotherapy. They are very quick to spot bad habits, particularly regarding posture, and put them right thereby preventing problems developing.
