Neurological Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation

Advanced Bobath Practitioners & Therapists

Cliff (Stroke)

Lets say I learned about the Manchester Neurotherapy Centre (MNC) through the NHS community physiotherapy that was treating me at the time. You may ask why she told me. My assumption is that there are great shortcomings in the quality and type of physiotherapy that is available to stroke patients within the NHS despite the Government's notion that stroke services is at the cutting edge in the North West. I will also assume that this is due to lack of training in the bobath technique. In addition, they were at a stage when they did not know what to do next to help me. The expertise available within the NHS may be adequate for a minority of patient, but if you really want to advance your rehabilitation, then bobath physiotherapy practised at this centre is the treatment of choice.

I started attending the MNC in March 2008, two months after I had been discharge from hospital following a stroke in November 2007. I must acknowledge that I have some way to go to achieve my goal of full fitness, but without the expertise of the very skilled practitioners at this centre my progress would be months behind. Naturally, I combine the bobath physiotherapy with exercises given to me be carried out at home, regular swimming, and other exercises I consider to be appropriate within or outside the swimming pool.

What I find remarkable with the MNC staff is that when I attend an appointment I simply tell the physiotherapist treating me the things I have been doing, or what I find most problematic and he/she appropriately tune into this, practically starting treatment before I finish giving my account. This seems to be consistent with how other clients are treated. It appears to be a partnership, where they listen to their clients and work with them in a harmonious way. As a professional who is acutely interested in the treatment and care received, I cannot avoid taking a keen interest in what is happening around me. It is evident that ethos of the centre is to ensure privacy, respect and client confidentiality, whilst achieving a high standard of treatment and care.
